State the locations of glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain in eukaryotes. Describe the products of each step and the end result of the electron transport chain.

Glycolysis occurs in the cytosol. It begins with glucose being broken down by various enzymes to 2 3 carbone pyruvate molecules. Glycolysis has an energy-investment phase and an energy payoff phase. These pyruvates then get oxidized to acetyl CoA, while generating 1 molecule of CO2 and NADH. The acetyl CoA goes to the mitochondrial matrix for two rounds of the Krebs cycle. The two net ATP produced from glycolysis is used to reduce Nad+ to NADH, generate CO2, produce GTP and FADH2. The result of two rounds is 6 molecules of NADH, 2 molecules of FADH2, 2 GTP, and 4 CO2. The electron transport chain occurs in the inner membrane of the mitochondria and requires FADH2 and NAHD channels that pump H+ molecules across the membrane. The electrochemical difference produced causes the protons to go down their concentration gradient. Oxygen is the main electron receptor, and ATP synthase is the channel which H+ goes through and combines with phosphate molecules to produce ATP. The result of all three processes is around 34 ATP molecules.
