WoW launches in China

In a press release from Blizzard the launch of World of Warcraft in China was announced. That in itself isn't all that interesting, just another localized launch after the US, Korea, and Europe. But the interesting part of the announcement is this:

Only players who have purchased an authorized CD key will be able to activate their accounts and enter the game. Each CD key costs 30 Yuan/RMB and can be purchased with a World of Warcraft Points Card. Point Cards also cost 30 Yuan/RMB and can be used at a rate of 9 points per hour (0.45 Yuan/hour) to play World of Warcraft.

That's right, there is no monthly fee. Instead you pay 0.45 Yuan per hour, which is about 5 US cents. Which is a lot cheaper than playing WoW in the US or in Europe, you would need to play over 300 hours per month to reach the $15 monthly fee of WoW in the US. There also is no CD sold, you just open an account for 30 Yuan ($3.60) and download the game for free. Well, I guess WoW has to be cheaper over there, due to people earning much less. But what really fascinates me is the pay-by-hour business model, because I find it a lot fairer than the pay-by-month model.
Comments:
I suspect that most players are in internet cafes. This model allows the Blizzard affiliate to absorb the risk, rather than pushing that onto the cafes.

I agree with the previous comment - if China (as a market) in any way ressembles Korea, internet cafe will be the way to go for most gamers. Most people can't afford a PC (much less keep it up to date) or even have to space to own one. Cafes are also a really popular social place to meet and spend time...

Wouldn't surprise me if they add an option to charge it directly to a cell phone or something similar.

Don't think I like that idea that much of paying by the minute, but I can't really explain why :P

I don't agree with you.
15$ in USA is just 2hours work and you can play a full mounth. but in china, 2hours work only can earn 40 yuan, just for one and a quater point card allowing to play 5000 min.
It's not good for you mutiply by the exchange rate because each county has different situation. It is a better way to scale the price by judging the work.
I'm a new immigrant to Canada, I played wow in both side. Trust me, it is not cheap in China, not at all. Acturally most of the Chines want to play monthly and admire the price in USA.
