Play to Crush

Do you think that I am a carebear, and you get tired of my sceptical attitude towards PvP and hardcore MMORPG gaming? Then you should head over to Play to Crush, the MMORPG blog for the player killers and hardcore PvP fans. Read there how to arrive at an attitude where the other players are your enemies, how to crush them, and then how to humiliate them on top of it.

Absolutely fascinating stuff, because it shows the game from a completely different angle. I totally disagreed with 100% of the opinions expressed in that blog, including the "Blizzard shouldn't open new servers" one, but reading these blog entries gives you a much better understanding of the mind of the player killer. If you ever want to persuade somebody to *not* play on a PvP server in WoW, make him read that blog. It scares the shit out of mild-mannered people like me. Which is obviously in the intention of Alex, the author. Well done!
Comments:
One mans PvPer is another mans greifer, and vice versa :P

Each to their own I say. If they don't bother me, I won't bother them. I don't like unconcentual PVP because there are people out there that will kill you, and corpse camp you (and loot all your stuff if that game alows), just because they know their winding you up.

Playing specifically to upset people sits badly with me.

Personally I don't understand PvP in MMO's.

FPS's? Yes I understand that. RTS's? Yes I understand that. At least those take brains and skill.

PvP in WoW is like fucking with a sock on your dick.

Oh no, WoW PvP takes some sort of skill to, no doubt about that, problem is skill gets wiped away when your enemy´s equipment has twice your stats, than kiss your skills good bye. This is why PvP for me, never will work side by side with PvE.

I would not touch any FPS where my enemy starts with the better gun, than me. But look in WoW more than half the server has the better gun, so i dont touch PvP there neither.

MMORPG PvP demands on the difference in player items, cause the majority of the 6 millionen WoW players lack the skills and need their items to cover the lack of it. This is the base for PvP in this kind of environment. I hate this too, others love it. At the exact same reason the concept of MMOFPS will never achieve such a success as WoW right now, at least not soon. This is copyin the real life, where not everyone can be Einstein. Even in virtual worlds not everyone can be a genius (=skill).

I understand PvP in MMORPGs. It is attractive *because* gear wipes out skill. Some people just feel the need to be better than others, to be able to beat them. If they are actually more skilled than others, they can can play a FPS or RTS. But if they want to crush somebody without really having to be better, they can turn to MMORPG.

Basically MMORPG PvP is attractive to people who *don't* want a fair fight. I got one-shotted by archers in DAoC many levels higher than me. I got attacked in UO Felucca while mining, while not in my combat gear, and the attackers still preferred to attack me two against one. I got zerged in AV with 40 Alliance players against 20 Horde players. I had a level 20 rogue on a WoW PvP server killed by a level 60 player just outside Crossroads, which is basically a newbie zone. I had a small freighter in EVE shot down by a battlecruiser.

I don't think anybody ever intended any of these fights to be "fair". The whole intent is to "Play to Crush", and fairness doesn't enter into that.

At some point it seems like there's be a limit to catering to your epeen.

There doesn't seem to be. Why else would level 17-19 blues sell for more than level 55 blues on my server? *boggle*

Why do so many games think the only way to go is all pvp or none?

or pvp only servers and the lowest choice....the pvp area.

Whats wrong with a off/on system.

That way pvpers get the whole game world to fight in..with out dragging in those who don't want it.

If you want to pvp you choice to turn it on and go....If not you don't have to worry about high levels killing noobs.

And for some of us..we like wathing the fight..just not being in it.

I don't want a fair fight either, but for other reasons. I like having to choose my battles and I like being afraid of other players. The problem of avoiding certain areas - and the temptation to not. If wits, street smarts, diplomacy, and reputation were never a factor and it really was just skill versus gear, MMO PVP wouldn't interest me either.

As a perennial weakling who's traveled the PVP territories of many different worlds mostly unscathed, I can assure you it is *not* simply a matter of skill versus gear. That is more often than not a cop-out people resort to so they can deny responsibility for poor planning, silly decisions, impatience, poor social skills, or in some cases all of the above.

On that note thanks for cluing me in to a great website. The funeral massacre video alone made my week.

" I understand PvP in MMORPGs. It is attractive *because* gear wipes out skill."

That is so far from the truth. Most of the people who intend to pvp in MMORPGs would like to play a game based on skill instead of items.

Why would a pvper want to waste his time raiding pve loot over and over just to compete? It takes time away from his main goal, destruction.

Combat is just another form of player interaction in MMORPGs. Unfortunately, most developers and carebears would like a world filled with braindead/scripted pve encounters instead of a dynamic world based on the skill of a human controlled character.

I disagree with the word "most" in that phrase. There are certainly a number of people with an highly idealized view of PvP as a test of skill against a human opponent as opposed to fighting a stupid AI. Unfortunately once you are in the game, you start to notice a totally different behavior. People usually attack only if they are sure to win, be it because of superior level, superior equipment, or superior numbers.

I think if you want a fair PvP fight, you need to play Counterstrike or something, and not a MMORPG.

ROFL please do not ever mention that blog again. Those aren't PvPers... those are faggot ass griefers.

Exploiting bad game designs and tricking players through bad game mechanics is griefing. Even in games like EVE where that type of play is "valid" it is still not considered PvP.

A real PvP is someone who fights for a purpose... not just because they can OWNZ another player.

The type of attitude from that blog is meant for FPS games.

Agreed! Play to Crush is a bunch of faggot ass griefers, they don't deserve the least bit of recognition. Fucking no life griefers.

Well, to say that in all mmorpgs, PvP is dull because a better geared player will always win isnt quite the truth.

Take my favorite mmorpg of choice, Shadowbane: I have constantly destroyed opponents who were wearing the "Uber, resource crafted gear" while I was wearing just basic, NPC bought stuff. Its not simply about "Oh my sword is uber, you lose", it is about creating a good build for your character, learning the ins and out of playing it, and then challenging others on the field.

I know a vast number of mmorpg players that not only prefer PvP, they require it in an mmo for it to be fun (myself included) and to say that there is no skill involved would be quite enraging.

Now, in a B.S. mmo like WoW, where gear is 99% of everything, this is understandable and yes, quite like fucking with a sock on your dick.

However, to wish to play the genra with out PvP is a bit boring, as there are plenty of more enrgossing, single player RPGs for that. Whats the point of playing with hundreds of people if you cant fight them?

Griefing and PvPing are two entirely different things.
