Priest respec

My level 60 priest used to be specced 15 discipline and 36 holy. But after playing him in raids and groups for a while I noticed that the top end holy talents are actually not that good. The lightwell I can only use every 10 minutes, and I have no control over who gets healed with it. Often it is somebody who didn't listen when I explained what a lightwell is, and who is just clicking on it with full health to see what happens. The spirit of redemption wasn't as useful as I thought, when I die I lose my target, and by the time I'm transformed into the angel and have reacquired my target, I already lost a part of the 10 seconds in which I can heal for free. So usually I only get 1 greater heal fired off, and not three as I had thought initially. And in a group situation, when I'm dead its often a wipe anyway, the spirit of redemption very rarely saves the situation.

So I decided on a new template: I'm putting 21 points in discipline, which allows me to get the spirit buff. That leaves 30 points in holy, which is enough for all the essential talents there, but leaves out lightwell and spirit of redemption.

Interestingly I found that if you have the spirit buff talent, you get the group spirit buff from your trainer. For the stamina buff and the shadow resistance buff I had to buy a book to get the group version.
Comments:
When you acquire Angel Form after dying, can you use the Function keys to target party members as you can when alive? If so, that might make Spirit of Redemption more useful, although you can only target party members this way and not other members of your 20-man Raid, unless Ctrl-Fx, Alt-Fx, Shift-Fx (etc) work to target Raid members.

You can use function keys, yes.

I was specced 31 holy 20 disc, respecced 2 nights ago to get divine spirit as I also didn't find lightwell very useful.

I'm also 21 disc, 30 holy, though I have spent a few points on talents that don't really make me a better healer, but make soloing a little less boring.

The other option is to go for a huge mana pool and go deeper into disc. Another priest I know has 10k mana pool using this method.

The reason you buy the group spirit buff is because if you respec you'll have to re-purchase your ranks of spells given through talents.

So if it was a book drop, you'd have to pick up a book every respec, which is probably excessive.

New reader here. As an (ex-)raiding priest, I enjoy reading someone else's healing experiences.

I had a 26/25 build. I thought that one gave me the best of both trees. Bigger mana pool and regen from disc and bigger and better heals from holy.

To make money on a young server as a tailor, you might want to check out the Robes of Arcana. Locks need it for a quest that gives a decent blue chest at the end of the series. The Robes are the first step in the chain so you'd have a market for it. The pattern is a rare-ish drop off of the Defias enchanters in Duskwood so you should be able to farm for it. I've got a lowbie lock on an established server and I never see any on the AH. On a young server, you might have a monopoly for a while.

Thanks for an interesting read during a boring work day.
