Tobold the raider
I guess I'm not a casual player any more. My level 60 warrior and priest were in a casual guild, which was allied with a raiding guild, so I was participating in raids with that raiding guild. Now this alliance split up, and I left the casual guild to join the raiding guild. Staying with the casuals would have meant no more raiding, and I didn't want to lose that aspect of the game.
The problem with casual guilds is that they are so much less well organized than raiding guilds. Raiding guilds have a regular raid schedule, with systems on who gets a spot on the raid, and how loot is distributed. Casual guilds in most cases just have a forum and a guild chat. There are very few casual guilds having a calendar to organize 5-man instances or other non-raid events. Standing around stupidly and looking for a group is my least favorite part of WoW, events organized for a fixed time and place are much more my thing. So now I'm a raider, who would have thought that?
Actually I think I'm still more interested in 5-man casual content, it is just that I have run out of it with my level 60 characters. I've visited the level 60 5-man instances often enough to have all the gear I want from there and know the places inside out. And what else is there to do for a level 60 character? Grinding some faction really isn't my cup of tea. So the choice I had with my level 60s was basically retire or raid. I *was* thinking of the retiring option, only playing lower levels, but I'm looking forward to playing the Burning Crusade in 4 months or so. If I retire the level 60s now, I will have lost the social network needed to enjoy the level 61-70 content later this year. So I'm planning on going back to my previous schedule of raiding with my level 60 on the weekends, and playing the lower levels during the week. We'll see how that works out.

Having tier 2 armor by the time the expansion hits wouldn't be such a bad thing either! Glad to see you are embracing raiding Tobold.
Got my first kill on Instructor Rezhuvios of Naxxramas, and Anub'Rekhan this past week. We're working on Grand Widow Faerlina next. And gearing up for patchwerk gogo!1
We also downed C'thun last week which was a joyous occasion!
Raiding is fun but time consuming.

Our Guild Leader joined a Raiding Guild on his Rogue Alt and got me an invite to Onyxia. Both the Dragonstalker's Helm and the Mature Dragon Sinew dropped. There was only one other Hunter in the Raid and he already had both the Helm and Rhok, so the Guild chose to gift me with two Epic items.
I applied to join them (their Raiding time works for me) but they're full on Hunters right now...go figure :P

You might be interested in a guild my gaming friends and I are going to start when the Expansion comes out.
Called Humility, the point is to build an intelligent, organized guild that is friendly to non-hardcore play. In other words, being able to organize 5 mans and PvP without being slaves to nightly raiding or anything unfun like that.

Thanks for the offer, Alcaras, but I guess your guild will be on US servers, while I'm playing on Euro servers.
Ah yes, forgot you were Euro based -- evenings for us is late nights for you :-/
Good luck to you finding something similar in Euro :) You're always welcome in our discussions in our forum.

You made two excellent statments in your post. 1.) If you don't want to raid at level 60, you might as well retire your toon. In my opinion, that is a broken game mechanic and content strategy. 2.) Most casual guilds aren't organized enough to raid - even if they have the numbers. The guild I was in was an exception for a long time but that ended as the dungeons increased in complexity. Complex dungeons require complex strategy and massive organization efforts, which casuals aren't typically equipped or of the mind to handle.
Raiding and casual doesn't work. Sorry, the two words won't fit together, and anyone who thinks they do, is operating under delusions. Raiding=pre-planning + strategy + time + repair costs + potions & misc = gold = time. You just can't call that casual. On your own terms or not, raiding activity has to be supported in effort and gold. You can bleed another toon dry, buy gold, farm, craft or whatever you choose to do. But you will need to do something, if you're going to raid. This strikes me as yet another huge broken aspect of the game. Or I could be bitter because a casual guild of 2+ years, with a history before WOW, went hardcore to support raiding. :-)
The only real reason I would find to raid at this point or even worry about my level 60, is for the reason Wolfgangdoom posted - remain viable for the expansion content. Stick with your priest. LOL It will be more fun than raiding anywayz :-P
