WoW patch 1.11.2
Here is the only item from the World of Warcraft 1.11.2 patch notes that you need to know:
- The Looking For Group channel is now defaulted off. Players will need to join the channel to access it. (/join LFG)
The well-known background of the World of Warcraft developers as being players in well organized raid guilds apparently makes them totally unable to understand even basic truths about playing without a social network. If you are part of a good guild, or similar network (like a network of official playtesters), you don't need a looking-for-group functionality. I would really like to force some of the developers to play through a couple of their dungeons on a server where they don't know anybody, relying only on the pickup groups you can find with the games own LFG functionality.
What WoW needs is a LFG system which is not chat-based, but works in a separate window. Players could either flag themselves there as looking for a group, for everything, or for one or several dungeons or quests. Or they could set up groups with specific limits, like a minimum level, minimum 1 warrior and 1 priest, etc., for going to a dungeon or doing a quest, and other players could see all the groups they would qualify for and sign up for them. I've seen such a system in Dungeons & Dragons Online, and it worked very well there. Why not in WoW?

I had thought about making an add-on that behaves much like you describe a few weeks ago. I learned that there was an LFG add-on already, so I lost interest in it. I think it's called "call to arms". Check it out and see if it's any good.
Call To Arms is an amazing mod, it does everything for you. It is WELL worth the 15 seconds it takes to download and install it.
You can auto-invite, limit classes, use it for raids, basically, you tell it what you want and what classes (and levels) you're looking for, and it automates the rest.
CTA FTW!

I also use call to arms, it's pretty good.
With regards to the new patch; The message is unclear. If you actually type "/join LFG" as it says, you end up in a channel called "LFG" which has just a few people in it.
The actual channel name is "Looking For Group" which I've been automatically subscribed to since the last patch. I wonder if I left "Looking For Group" would the "/join LFG" command work properly?

If the LFG CallToArms mod is the one I heard about long ago, doesn't it require that those participating have the mod installed? If so, it is of limited use given such a requirement.
Side Note - The WoW Devs are also extremely divorced from very specific aspects of the player community and game. E.g. From various Paladin reports (unconfirmed, so take with a grain of salt) no WoW Dev has played a Paladin to any high level (say, over 40). Many Paladins cite this as further evidence that the Devs have no clue what to do with this class and really don't care.

That's odd. I was playing last night and the /lfg channel was on by default. Or was that patch not 1.11.2?
WoW has a non-chat dungeon signup function. They are called a "meeting stones" which are rarely used.
