Gamasutra interviews Mark Jacobs
Interesting interview with Mark Jacobs on Gamasutra. While I wasn't a big Mark Jacobs fan before, because some of the things he said about RMT were just lunatic raving rants, in this interview he makes a lot of very sensible statements. Especially about the success of World of Warcraft, the size of the market, and the chance of Warhammer Online to "beat" WoW.
Peering deep into my crystal ball, I predict Warhammer Online reaching a number 2 spot on the MMO market, similar to the position Dark Age of Camelot held for some time. It will attract a lot of burned out WoW players, due to having a similar look and better PvP (the one definitive area of superiority of Mythic over all other companies), but it won't "beat" WoW. It *can't* beat WoW, due to requiring much higher system specs, you can't sell more games than there are PCs that it could possibly run on. But Warhammer Online is certainly a game I will be playing, even if I am not a big PvP fan.

Same here, I can't wait for Warhammer online to hit the shelves. I am a little curious however, just how high of system specs are we talking here? I have a P4 3.0 with 1.2Ram so I hope that will be sufficient to play this game. One major cosmetic reason I am really looking forward to see what Mythic can do, is their claim that a high level character will look like a high level character. I think that a WOW warrior in full epic does look cool, but the shields are one major let down after another. I agree with Mythic that when a character hits the level cap, everyone and their brother should be able to tell just by looking at them that if you mess with that character, expect to have your lungs packaged in a nice little jar. If anyone would like to check out my wow blog please feel free to visit http://wolfgangchronicles.blogspot.com/ It is a new blog so I am still learning some of the mechanics, but I would love to hear input on what you all think. PS thanks for the blog tobold, I have read most of your entries dating back to 2004 and I have to say that your blog has been quite helpful to me; especially since I work at a place that blocks any site that deals with video games.
Mythic has superior PvP? When did this happen? Did Mythic at some point add a feature that allowed a character below level cap to even pretend to be effective in PvP? Restricted access does not superior PvP make.
Daoc had a special PvP system that made it pretty superior in my opinion (pre TOA). Basically, up to L50 the game was PvE more or less, and after that it switched it's focus to PvP (or RvR as it was called). Sorry for speaking about Daoc in past tense, but for me it is. :)
Sure, you could PvP before hitting L50, but doing so might not have been as fun, or as developed as at the cap. Despite that there are issues with Daoc that I don't like nowadays I will always look fondly back on it as the game that really had most of it figured out when it came to PvP. WoW, although fun for some time doesn't come close. The whole meta-level thingy created by epic equipment in several tiers destroys all hope of it ever being a good PvP game. It's all about the loot there. In Daoc it wasn't, skill and tactics was more important. Well at least not back in the days when I played, tbh I have no idea if that has changed. Quite possibly it did with TOA. All that artifact leveling and crap.
I do hope that Mythic has learned all it can from Daoc, both the good and the bad, and will make WHO something really really good. Unless something really big happens I'll be there to check it out though, hoping that that's the case.

I'd have to agree, I played DAOC for 4 years and WoW since release (though not nearly as much in the last few months as for the first year.)
WoW has the PvE side of the game down past - I found that aspect much more fun (though you do end up falling back on grinding more often than not). But the one thing DAOC had that really beat WoW hands down was the PvP game. The DAOC Battlegrounds & frontier system *PRE-TOA* were so much better than anything WoW has managed so far. RvR post the Frontiers expansion took a downturn for me - that was the point where I stopped playing DAOC altogether and focused myself completely on WoW. However, having seen endgame PvP in WoW, I do find myself missing the thrill of stealthing around in Emain with my Shadowblade and the amazing 1-on-1 fights you could have, let alone keep sieges and huge 100 vs. 100 man fights on a regular basis.
I really hope that all the PvP changes coming in the Burning Crusade expansion will help WoW PvP become a little more like what I used to love so much.. right now, the endgame for someone who's not in a hardcore raiding guild (or is in one, but doesn't have the time to raid, like me) leaves me pretty unenthused about playing.
And now I find myself waiting patiently for both the BC expansion and Warhammer Online... :)
