Mudflation and raiding

The Burning Crusade is throwing a long shadow, and already has a measurable effect on World of Warcraft, in spite of not being expected to go live for another 6 weeks or so. The reason is the beta, and tons of websites already posting the items you will be able to get in the expansion. And there are lots of items in the expansion which are significantly better than the loot you can get from Blackwing Lair, and a lot easier to get. Mudflation at its finest, the new items of the expansion devaluating the old raid loot.

Both Friday and Saturday I stood in BWL with 30 to 35 people of my guild, and not enough people of the right classes to even attempt Razorgore. Friday we ended up going to Molten Core, which was lucky, because I got my Gloves of Prophecy there, and now have 6 Prophecy, 2 Transcendence. Nice! But some guild members were online and simply refused to come to BWL, citing that they didn't want to bother wiping repeatedly in BWL any more, if they could get better loot easier in Burning Crusade.

And of course besides the loot effect, some people simply don't feel like playing the "old" World of Warcraft any more, now that the new one is on the horizon. Either they are playing the beta (like I do), or they are taking a break until the expansion comes out.

The effect on 40-man raids is profound. Guilds are usually designed in a way that they don't have too many reserves for raiding, that the 40-man raids just fill up. If some people burn out, take a break, play the beta, or just wait for better loot from BC, the remaining guild members often can't get enough people for the more challenging encounters together.
Comments:
We have the same problem now. And its getting worse as my guild is in the beta. Of course this was expected but players should be aware that BC takes time to finish, its still buggy, unfinished, many things are missing.

We consider punishment for players who just dont come with our raid because they get BCLazy.

I think this is indicative of raid makeup. There are always 20-25 (coincidence of what is to come?) core members who show up raid after raid, not just for the loot but for the challenge of learning new encounters, working as a team and perhaps socialization too.

These players will be the 25-mans that are most successful in the future.

My guess is there is a lot of "filler" in 40-mans. Perhaps not in the hardcore raiding guilds I don't know. But I can imagine in the majority of raiding guilds there are 15-20 raiders who don't really pull their weight by choice or otherwise.

They pretty much just come to instances that are on farm. Raiders who aren't will to wipe over and over again, and aren't willing to keep showing up until the epics start flowing. Raiders who simply have less time to raid - which is a fact of life. These raiders will become casual players who can get their "not epic but just as good" loot elsewhere.

I sort of realized this a month or so ago, when it was revealed that BG rep would be overhauled. So I no longer wanted to raid, and I had no incentive to get my rep up in BGs either. The only thing that made much sense was to try and get another character to 60, so thats what ive been doing.

Our guild on Forstmourne very early on in the piece said we would never step into MC/BWL/Naxx prior to BC. We have ZG and AQ (now up to Ossirian!) pretty much on farm, and our very close guild is enjoying the more tight feel of 20 man raids. I think this will bode us well for increase to 25.

We are going to get into Naxx etc post BC, but at the moment, it seems like too much hassle for too little reward.

I think this is a crazy way to think. We all play games for fun, and if waiting for BC to be released is what a guildie wants to do for a month or so then who cares? I hope that many other guilds are reacting the same way as it should help boost recruitment for laid back guilds that are aimed at progressing thru BC.
