WoW Journal - 15-December-2006

Came home late from work last night and only had 2 hours time to play. I went to Alterac Valley anyway, because I wanted to test whether AV is really the best place to farm honor. It isn't. The first battle we surprisingly won in half an hour, and I'm proud to say that it was me who struck down General Vanndar with an execute killing blow. The second battle never ended, because when we were just about to lose enough people teleported back, took all graveyards on our side, and kicked the Alliance back all the way to their home territory. That was kind of fun too, but after 90 minutes the game was still a solid draw, so I had to leave without a victory mark. No wonder defence isn't popular in AV, losing and restarting earns you more than defending.

More importantly I managed to do 144 honor kills, which is *exactly* the same amount of kills I got the day before in 4 hours of WSG. The 4 hours of WSG had given me only 1314 honor, and so by making the same amount of kills in half the time I figured I would get at least more honor per hour. That didn't happen. This morning I checked my score and only had 536 honor. I got *less* honor per hour in AV than in WSG, in spite of winning AV once and making twice the kills per hour. Apparently the bonus honor from winning the small battlegrounds counts for more than the number of kills. I had thought that the estimated numbers you can see in your combat chat window, giving you just 2 honor points for killing a sergeant and 6 for a field marshal was inaccurate. But apparently between 2 and 6 points per kill is exactly what you end up getting. Long way to 22,500 honor then.

Oh, and merry christmas, the christmas event in World of Warcraft started today. As far as I can see it is still exactly the same even than the last two years, so I'm not terribly excited.

Just check your bonus honor in an AV. You can get up to 400ish more honor by destoying the bunkers, killing the Lieutants and the Captains and the survival of your own officiers. Funny thing is, that you can actually loose and get more honor than the winning side.

Yesterday our raid was cancelled (again) and we decided to do some pvp. We managed to get 15-20 people in the same AV and choose not to rush but to defend and have some fun. And it was fun!

The first wave of horde was taken completely by suprise when we defended Belinda and the graveyard with up to 20 people (something which is never done in our realmpool). We fought rougly 20-30 minutes in the midfield (even summoned twice and tried it a third time) before the "random" players killed Drek'Thar and spoiled the fun a bit.

But the best part was the battleground chat. In each AV everyone was upset because we did not rush like they were used to do and even got flamed when we said we were doing PvP not PvE here. But after half an hour or so the mood changed (and I guess the "Honorgrinders" left) and people stated, that it was one of the best AV they ever had. Quiet nice (also the ~2.5k honor I got in those 3 AV is quite nice :) ).

This is a design flaw.

In my experience PvP bonus Honor from "winning" far outwieghs the honor gained from kills. And rightly so.
The team effort is what should be rewarded, not the individual just looking for kills.

Yep, that's it. Farm npcs in AV.

In wsg/ab follow the zerg and do whatever you have to do not to die. I spend a *lot* of time in AB mounted riding to wherever the current confict is.

My experience over the past 1 1/2 weeks has been that there really isn't a "best" BG to gain honor in, because there's just too many permutations.

If you have a dominating team, AB or WSG are good, fast honor. But if you're pugging, you risk getting completely shut out of any honor at all by a premade that's not interested in a fight, just farming you for honor.

A complete win in AV (killing all lts, capping all bunkers, etc.) is worth more honor than any other bg, but also takes more time. A rush win is stupid, you get less honor than winning an AB or WSG because you skip so much stuff. AV is one of the best places to lose, as its easy to cap bunkers and kill lts. even while you're losing. But if you join a losing AV after that's all be done (happened to me twice in the past week) you're stuck getting nothing.

I think it comes down to finding the BG where either a) you have the most fun and/or b) your realm tends to win (but doesn't rush AV!)

I think I like AB the best overall. Why? There's no way to indefinately prolong it, so the longest a game will ever take is roughly how long it takes to accumulate 2000 with 3 nodes capped.

AV is a lot like WSG where if you win it fast you get good honor and if you win but it takes a long time you get bad honor. The difference is in AV if you lose it fast you still get really good honor, if you lose WSG you get absolutely terrible honor.

A guild group capping 3 flags as fast as possible will get better honor than AV, but for most PuG situations as long as you afk out of any big turtles you'll get much faster honor in AV.

AB is the middle ground since you can't really get into a bad turtle since it has a time limit.

AV is eziest way to get quick honor if every1 know what they are doing, its a map setup for alliance to win and in unfair for horde, thus the eziest way to get honor is smash up the NPC's cap bunker GY and lose in under 15min. If u loose 8 games in 15-20min and cap 140 honor for each game plus a few kills thats 1k honor in 2.5hrs....

It is funny, how many horde players say "AV is unfair for the horde because of the design" but never consider how easy they can kill Vandar compared to Drek.

I lost a lot of games just because the horde captured stormpike, kitet the marshalls away and killed Vandar with ~10-15 players inside the bunker. Try to kite a warmaster with his charge and whirlwind (something which can one-hit my priest and he is not just green/blue)...

Best sollution could be a weekly (or even based on a /rnd(2) ) change of the sides and the abilities of the NPCs.
