World of Warcraft realm splits

Blizzard is fully aware that there will be a wave of resubscriptions flooding the servers soon. Cap'n John alerted me that they are working on a way out: server splits, currently being beta tested. Unlike other games, where you had to give a /move command to move to the split server, World of Warcraft will present you with a choice on the character selection screen. If you don't chose, you will be moved to the same server as your guild leader (nifty!), or if you don't have a guild, you'll be moved in a way to even out the population. You could also end up on the server you didn't chose if too many people opt for one of them.

That will cause a lot of anguish, but I'm afraid it might be necessary for the older servers. The important thing is to arrange choices with your friends and guild mates, to avoid splitting away from your friends. But accidents always happen in these cases, which can be very annoying.
Comments:
I personally think that such a redistribution system will be of limited value.

I encountered minor (~15 minute) prime-time queues all weekend on Rexxar. In the downtime I was curious, and so I visited the WoW realm status page. I found that all but maybe three Normal and RP realms were in a Max (queued) state, and almost all PvP and RPPvP servers were not queues (maybe about three were Max (queued)). I will have to start logging in early and stay logged in to circumvent queues -- then again, most everyone else will start doing the same thing. My new concern is if I were to get d/c-ed and then encounter a long queue trying to log back in. If that starts happening to members of parties in instances or raids, things will get ugly.

So I'd guess that this 'solution' in testing by Blizzard to be a move that will not solve the problem, but rather give everyone an equal share in the problem.

The obvious solution is to open more new realms.
An alternative solution would be to offer free character moves from PvE realms to PvP realms, something that is not currently allowed.
A third solution that would not require additional new realms would be to consolidate PvP populations on fewer realms and convert the emptied servers into PvE realms.

We moved to the Scarlet Crusade about a year ago because it was a low population RP server. Last night we were over 500th in queue. It look 45 minutes to log on. It's just been getting worse and worse the closer to the BC we get.

I like the idea of splitting up a server that has severe population issues. The only issue I saw (correct me if I'm wrong) is that you can't actively choose which of you characters would go where. The automated sorting will give it a best guess, but it would be nice to have more than "all or nothing" control.
