WoW raiding scene angst

Tomas Rofkahr, a fellow blogger, recently commented here about "the angst that seems to go along with the whole raiding scene". He says "Nothing seems to ruin guilds faster or pit normally reasonable people against one another than having to fight for raid slots and loot. Throw in a model that requires people to fit a required raid 'mold' and not play the character they want and you get ... well - work." That remark struck me, because I'm feeling that "angst" in relation to my raiding guild. Will my priest still be needed when we start raiding again? Am I too slow to level up and equip/attune myself? Will I be able to get into raids now that the raid-size has shrunk from 40 to 25?

And that's just the fear of a holy spec priest. After all, I'm still the best healing class/spec around. Must be even harder for other classes which are more numerous, but less useful for raiding. And woe betide those that chose a talent tree which isn't optimal for raiding, like shadow priests. Many guilds have grown since the Burning Crusade came out, due to people reactivating their accounts. So raiding guilds now have even more people vying for less raiding slots than before. And once you got that sorted out, you still need to rediscuss the whole loot distribution question. Do you keep your old DKP system, do you modify it, do you reset it to zero, do you introduce a completely new system? Makes you wonder if all that hassle is really worth it, especially in view of what happened to your old epic raid loot, now replaced by Burning Crusade greens and blues.

But on the other hand I don't think that raiders are a different species of MMO players with a particularly twisted mind set. The "required raid mold" is not something that players invented, but rather something that they discovered as a consequence of the "laws" of the virtual world. If 25 random players of random classes with random specs and random gear could successfully complete a raid, people would probably do that. The "we need x protection spec warriors as tanks and y holy spec priests as healers, plus z of this or that other class for this or that other function" rules are not arbitrary, but have been derived at by trial and error. That "mold" is what works best, and the raiding dungeons are designed to be of a difficulty level that only that what works best is able to beat them.

People simply want to play. The angst is all about the dreadful possibility of not being able to play, because you've seen all the solo content, and nobody invites you to participate in the group / raid content. Even the fight about loot is not about the loot itself, but about access to the even harder raid dungeons that require that sort of loot. The reason why the casual players can't understand the angst is that they still have so much of solo WoW unplayed before them, and they just don't need a raiding guild to access new content.
Comments:
Well, I have no doubts that I would have had a spot with the people I'd been raiding with previously if I wanted it. They were shocked and not all that happy that I quit raiding (and WoW temporarily) even though I'm in an easily replaceable class.

Even now as I plod along slowly (barely dinged 64 last night) I know that there are raid guilds that would gladly take me in. It's a nice enough feeling I guess, I just really don't feel like raiding any more.

The "mold" has been broken, well at least modified. Skilled players have often been able to replace warriors with feral druids or shamans and priests with resto druids or pallies. But what about approaching an instance from a different angle. My guild has an utter lack of warriors and priests so viable alternatives needed to be created. Soloing strategies work i.e. kiting/voidwalker/feral druid. We did ZG with no warriors before BC. 2 locks, 1 priest, 1 rogue did scholo. Replace "mold" with ingenuity and the use of ALL talents and everything becomes acceptable. The problem is finding players with this mind set.

I am one of the raid leaders of our >100 man guild, having pulled together all the necessary people to enter the Molten Core, forming a bunch of average guys 'n gals into a good fighting troupé that managed to go through MC, then BWL (another raid leader in our guild took over that one) and finally AQ40 (we made it up to the Twin Emps). I was mostly challenged to do that because raid leading is fun. Items came along the way but imho are the means and not the ends in themselves.

Now.... i lag behind my guild mates. The hasty fellows in our guild could not wait to hit 70, due to work and my relaxed EASK approach I am still lingering around at 66 mainly doing quests together with my wife.

As I am not the only one, we still lack the raid capacity in our guild. Too few are 70, it will require more time to attune ourselves to the new raid dungeons.

Still, even as a normal member, I would not fear any more if I am in a raid or not. My approach will be totally relaxed. If you are keen (or should I daresay e-peen) on items, the next expansion pack will render all your purples and even oranges quite soon worthless.

If you want to visit all the cool places.... so what? Once you guild has (with or without you) manages to "clear" the next big thing in raid dungeons - people will jump off the hook and enjoy something else. I am pretty sure quite a lot of guilds experienced the following pattern (lets take Onyxia for example):

Phase 1) Hard to get a raid together. Not many people want to wipe frequently or invest time to attune themselves.

Phase 2) Whoa, wait! Instance on farm? Easy epics? Me wanty!!!!

Phase 3) Been there, seen that, got the Tier 2 cap. Bye folks, see you next raid instance!

And guess what... the same thing will happen. Actually, I am quite surprised that someone so MMORPG experienced as you, Tobold, falls into the trap of believing that the raid slots will be filled "once and for all"? I hardly doubt that this will happen, except for uber-pro-hardcore-guilds like Nihilum and co who will always try to stay ahead of others. Do I care for those people? I could cot care less for them. They want it, they shall have it. "Live fast, die young." Go ahead!

1. Shadowpriests are far from useless in a raid. With 2.0 patch their damage returns both HP and MP, misery has synergy with all DPS casters, and putting them in a group with warlocks especially is amazing.

2. Holy priests are gimp. VERY gimp at the moment. The holy tree stinks, holy/disc stinks, speccing deep holy or deep disc stinks. As a priest myself I'm encouraged by Blizzard to never PvP unless I'm shadow specced. Holy paladins outdamage holy priests, outlast holy priests (healing AND mitigation AND survability AND against assist trains), and have far better utility in the form of blessings, auras and in-a-pinch tanking.

3. It's just not fun right now to be any class other than Blizzard's favored at the moment. Warriors and priests are left by the wayside as SUPPORT CHARACTERS ONLY so that others' fun is enhanced while our own is diminished. Screw being a holy priest, seriously. Spec shadow, convince your raid leaders of their viability, and never look back. Let the freaking "hybrid" healers that can heal better than priests be main healers.

/rant over.

Anonymous has it right. Players can adapt and have adapted.

The "mold" comes from raid schedules. It comes from DKP. It comes from all the things that make hardcore raiding what it is... a fucking borefest.

Raiders will always blame casual gamers even when blaming them doesn't make any damn sense.

Raiders aren't here to play the game. They are here to win it. I guess no one informed them of the fact that MMORPGs are not designed to be "won".

Let's also not forget that the sudden flood of gold means that respeccing isn't nearly as painful as it used to be. I'm a lot more cavalier nowadays about swapping specs or even just clearing up mistakes- I accidentally bought a talent I didn't want, so I dropped 15g on a quick respec. It's weird to not think of respeccing of a big momentous thing anymore.
