Massive Magazine closes down

Remember me complaining about Massive Magazine taking stuff from this blog without linking to me? Well, I got an apology from the author, it won't happen again. Sure it won't, because The Escapist just reported that Massive Magazine is closing down. The downside being that I paid $10.99 for an online subscription of which I only ever got 2 issues. And as I just read them online, not downloaded them or anything, I can't even re-read those two.

It is not that games magazines aren't profitable, apparently the games division from the parent company The Globe had revenues growing by 50%. And no, it wasn't my complaint either that shut them down. Instead it was a lawsuit from MySpace that led to the demise of Massive Magazine, quote: "The Globe was recently found liable in a California court for hundreds of thousands of spam messages sent to MySpace users." That's what you get if your business practices aren't squeaky clean. You might be able to get away with messing with Tobold, but you don't mess with Rupert Murdoch!
Comments:
As of last night, I was still able to download the Winter edition. I didn't try to download the fall one, as my husband had already converted it to pdf form.

I'm really sad about this, not because they published Massive, but because they published Computer Games Magazine, hands-down my favorite of the US PC-centric gaming magazines ;/

If you used a credit card, have the charges reversed. I did.

This is why I use paper clips and small balls of lint as currency, it makes it kind of hard for me to purchase things over the web, but saves a lot of frustation and anxiety that I would have worrying about hackers stealing my credit card numbers to by hot prosts with.

ps. the word verification I have to put in is puzzay, I thought that was funny...durrrrr!

I feel a little differently about the whole thing. I always though CGM was a bunch of tripe. It was a propeganda rag about games I really didn't feel as though they contributed to the industry dialougue or had special insights not covered by 100 other sources. I never bothered with massive, but some people seemed to find it somewhat interesting.

Then again, they were caught red-handed stealing Tobold's material, so it makes one wonder how much of their 'useful' information was really their own?

http://www.cgonline.com/

Is that their website? I have to say it's one of the better layouts that I've seen.

In any case, I can fully understand your anger over getting ripped off.

meh - no loss. The rag had some promise, but simply put - I don't think quarterly print media can do justice to the MMO scene. It simply can't keep up. There are just too many great resources available online that give (IMHO) a much better feel for the industry, the games, and the people that play them.

And they seemed so much less sleazy than the other magazine. I liked it. The articles weren't the stuff you see on blogs and forums, there was usually an angle that isn't often brought up in discussion, and they weren't condescending or prudish.

When I discovered the other magazine, Massive Online Gamer or whatever it's called, I was kind of happy I'd finally be able to read about games I give a damn about on the subway, etc. and it was so disappointing. What a drag these guys are folding, even if they are a bunch of of asswipes.

The website is Massive-Magazine.com and apparently it is still active. So I at least was able to download the Fall and Winter 2006 issues before they totally close down. Too late to reverse charges, already paid them in December.
