First LotRO content patch

My Lord of the Rings Online launcher is currently downloading 2,705 files to update to version 1.2, otherwise known as the Shores of Evendim content patch. Patch notes here. Best quote from the patch notes:

"There were some invisible walls appearing on the slopes of Weathertop. We made them...disappear. Come on, who writes this stuff? Invisible walls are invisible how do they - what? It's still on? Oh, umm. We removed the offending walls."

As I'm still downloading it, I didn't have opportunity to play with the new stuff yet. But things I like from the patch notes are the reworked farming system, the now scaleable UI, and the addition of a clock to show you what time it is in-game. Things I'm sceptical about are the first 24-person raid instance and the introduction of epic armor sets. Come on guys, if I had wanted raid content I would have stayed with World of Warcraft. :)

Most important change of course is the addition of a new mid-level zone, as previously solo quests in the 30's were apparently too few. Free added content which is accessible to all players, and not just to a small elite minority, is the most important thing a patch can add to keep a game alive and attractive.
Comments:
I'm curious as to if the Epic armor sets are ONLY attainable from the 24 man raid, or if they can be gotten as regular world drops as well.

From what I understand there are other sets of armor from level 20 or 30 up too. Gonna see if I can't learn what they are tonight and into the weekend.

Until Artificial Intelligence can develop mmorpg content faster than players can consume it, there's never going to be an end game that doesn't involve repeatable instanced content.

For casuals, our only hope is class diversity, so we can start new characters and level up new toons.

Asheron's Call proves that theory wrong, anon. I'm hoping LotRO takes a similar approach. A new zone and storyline every 2 months or so will keep me around for a good long while (provided it's of the same type content that previous storylines were, ie: not raid-only, etc).

More companies need to learn this.

Yes, more Zul'Gurub type content please. 20 Man, 3 Day timer, no attunement needed raids.

I'm actually curious about LOTRo raiding, mostly because I feel that WoW has more polish on class abilities (i.e. more thought in how the abilities play into what classes need to do) and I want to see if that's true in raiding as well.

My main is a guardian and the idea of tanking in a raid while power limited is ... interesting to scary.

Also minstrels have a fairly long cooldown on their heals, so that's interesting as well...

I think LOTRo does cater more to casuals than WoW does, but if it wants to have broad appeal, going for some raid content is fine I think. Just as long as they honestly add interesting content for all playing styles it's good and don't degrade to a rep-grind repetition model for non-raid endgame like WoW does.

This fits perfectly with my new "take it very slow and easy" approach. Logging in from time to time, gives me tons of quests to choose from. Over the course of the next months, even years I think there is enough content added that my explorer soul will never become bored. No more "what happens at endgame" questioning. Just a long continuous storyline which is something WOW does not provide for me.

Tobold you should have availed of the pre-downloadable patcher. I grabbed it on Wednesday night while I was sleeping. It took no more than 15 minutes yesterday for the patch to unwrap and install.

No hiccups, no downtime - and I was playing the game. In my opinion this was very impressive for a major patch day.
