Red 5 Studios

Two years ago a group of employees who had been working on World of Warcraft left Blizzard to form their own MMO company: Red 5 Studios. They haven't announced yet what game exactly they are working on, except that it will be a "next generation MMO", but they do have some interesting ideas.

To my surprise I just received an offer to "discuss opportunities here with our development team in Orange County" from Red 5 Studios. I declined, because I already have a job which is probably paying a lot more than a game developers job, and because I don't plan to move to the US (who wouldn't necessarily let me immigrate anyway). Maybe I am too conservative, but European companies wouldn't send out job offers based just on a blog. If somebody wants my game development ideas, he can "borrow" them from my blog. (If you do, it would be nice to put a magical item named after me in the game. The CEO of Red 5 Studios, Mark Kern, has the Mark of Kern ring in WoW, so he knows what I'm talking about.) If there is any subject I didn't cover, I'm even willing to write about it on request. But quitting my brick-and-mortar job to pursue a risky career in game development just isn't my thing. I wish them the best of luck, but the concept that everybody who worked on WoW would automatically be able to create a game as good is hard to believe, even if they had help from me. :)

Oh, and if you want to work for Red 5 Studios, they have a recruitment web page with open positions.

Grats on the offer Tobold, means you are doing something right here :)

Glad you shared the info with us as well, considering it was somewhat private.

Any possibility for you to be a side consultant for Red 5?

I think that's awesome news for you and the industry. An concrete offer from a studio means at least one of them read your ideas and are quite serious at looking at the genre and make changes to the status quo.

Totally understandable that you would rather stay at your current job. I wonder if Red 5 would be open to retaining you as a consultant of some kind. Although that might mean you won't be able to write as freely about MMOs on your blog as a result.

Hmm an interesting dilemma. I'm sure many of your readers would like to continue consuming your blog but then again having at least some of your ideas regarding MMO design made concrete would be nice. Oh well, at this point it's all conjecture anyway.

Again, exciting news and love the blog, thanks.

They probably wanted you for the Community Manager job in which case it doesn't even pay enough for a US resident.

I highly doubt they would hire someone to actually work on the design team based on their blog.

Wonder if game companies are starting to look more at remote workers as other industries are.

Companies have been outsourcing artwork for a long time now. Occasionally they will for programmers or multiplayer maps. Fulltime remote workers? Don't count on it.

I don't even get many requests from goldfarmers trying to advertise. I shall go cry bitter bitter tears.

Gratz on the offer. It's always nice when people you respect end up respecting you.

If I remember right, Red 5 is the studio that licensed the Project Offset engine. That combined with some ex-Blizzard art gurus should result in some pretty spectacular visuals.

The skill set of a popular blogger would mainly fit with a community manager position. It makes sense to extend search for community managers to blogger, more so than people active on forums etc since bloggers may have a wider penetration of potential game audiences and possibly better name recognition.

Did you look at the descriptions for the available jobs and which did fit your profile?

No, I wasn't that interested. I mean sure, the offer is flattering, because they don't know anything about me except for what I write here. But I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm already earning more than any game developer below star level ever will. Games might be way cool, but if you are still young and wondering for what a career you should go I can assure you that science / engineering pays a lot better.

I meant mainly out of curiosity why they were asking. There is no surprise that you were not interested IMHO.

I'd have to agree with that. While the payment was not primarily on my mind when I was in that position to decide close to 25 years ago, I can't say that I regret the outcome in that respect.
