WAR rollback problems?
Shamutanti wrote me because he had a problem in Warhammer Online with his character having been rolled back a day. I found other people reporting the same, both on the US servers and on the Euro servers. Anyone here had his character rolled back and lost levels, had to redo quests, etc.? Would be good to find out how widespread the problem is.

Yes, my character experienced a 10-15 minute rollback on Phoenix Throne at about 11:30pm pacific time last night. I was in the Marshes of Madness fighting zombies, and the game was taking longer and longer to respond to things like when I was casting spells. Mobs stopped moving. Eventually the entire game froze up, and I had to tab out and kill the game client. When I tried to log back in again, I could still get to the character selection screen, but couldn't get back into the actual game again.
I figured it was just a connection problem on my end, but a few minutes later I was able to get back into the game again, and my experience bar was lower than it was before, several items I had looted were no longer in my inventory, and I was in a different location than before. I only lost a few minutes, but it was very odd. I guess the server must have crashed.

I logged out at level 16 mid-afternoon and logged back in in the evening to find I was level 14 again, it really pissed me off big time. Almost an entire days play down the tube. When I posted a complaint I was told sorry it's a known bug, cya!
Rollback of a whole day? :O
I only once experienced a server wide rollback for about 15 minutes in EQ2. Of course that time window included me frantically running around Antonica collecting stuff for a holiday quest... Whoa I was pissed about these wasted 15 minutes.
Imagine I would have done something significant to the progress of my character during that time. Or just had a named mob spawned and killed after a 4 hour camp or something (yes EQ2 had these).

In the old days of Ultima Online, it was the norm of a 1-3 hours of rollback in case of server crash.
But Ultima Online is a totally different game. It has a really persistent world with tons of objects to be saved. Server used more than one hour to save a snapshot of the world so you could have rollbacks.
Today's games have very little data to save. Mainly your character as mobs aren't saved but spawned at server restart. And you can't have objects dropped on floor.
So I don't see how there could be a so big rollback. 10-20 minutes could happen. But hours and days... too much.

I have had this happen to me usually when I get one of those popups saying that the server will be restarted soon. Twice now I kept playing until 30 seconds to shutdown only to log back in as soon as the servers were up and see that I had lost 10-15 minutes of progress.
Now I just logout when I see the server shut down pop up.

I just noticed that Magnus stated that many of the longer rollbacks are because of players not noticing that they were redirected to the cloned servers sort of. See http://www.warhammeralliance.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1796648#post1796648
