Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy VII was the first Final Fantasy game I ever played, because I found a PC version of it, and didn't have a Playstation at the time. I eventually bought Playstations later, and played a number of different Final Fantasy games on them. But FF7 was one of my favorites, together with FF9. So I was kind of interested when I heard they were doing a remake with new graphics. Now I've seen some gameplay videos, and this isn't the FF7 I was looking for. It is a button-mashing action game with lots of noise, lights, and explosions. Just watching it makes my head hurt. I am so disappointed!

Comments:
Agreed.

I want a remaster, not a remake!

For what it's worth there is a "classic" mode that automates the button mashing portion and you only select your main actions on your turn.

I was excited for this game but after seeing the story changes by the Kingdom Hearts guys I'm no longer certain I'm going to get it when it comes out for PC.

I bet once more people finish it and realize it's not a remake but more like sequel to the original game this game will be very controversial.

From what I understood from this video, the classic mode is more of an "easier than easy" auto mode than a way to make the game turn-based again. Which is to say that I would absolutely play the game in classic mode if I would play it, but I would miss the specific challenges that turn-based combat offers.

The original game with those character and environmental models would be great. However, the gameplay looks a lot more like Devil May Cry than FFVII. DMC is fine for what it is, but I find that style of combat exhausting in long sessions. The only similar games that I've been able to see all the way through are the Omnishu (sp?) games. They are much less technical than DMC games and also pretty short by modern standards.

In any case, based on that video I think I'd rather play through the original VII again than play the sequel. A wasted opportunity from my perspective, but I'm sure the games will do well.

Eh that video isnt entirely accurate. The AI controls the other characters you arent actively playing is no matter what setting you are using and they do try to block or dodge incoming attacks.

What classic mode does is automate the normal attacks so you arent mashing the button. It will try to stick onto whatever enemy you target and mash the attack button for you.

You can still block, dodge and use your main attacks, potions, and magic when your ATB Gauge is full.

That said many dont like it because it feels like the game is playing itself.

There hasn't been real turn based combat in Final Fantasy games in years now. They are all actiony with psuedo turn based mechanics in the form of gauges that fill up and let you unleash large attacks or magic or use items.
