WoW Journal - 17-February-2006

Kyroc his level 55 last night in Un'goro. I was grouped with a level 55 mage from my guild who helped me kill Blazerunner to end the Legend of Zelda quest series. I died a couple of times trying, but finally we worked out how to do it with just us two. That was fun. So we killed him once, I go back to the quest giver, and find out that I'm missing the Golden Flame that Blazerunner was supposed to have. Hmmm. We go back, kill Blazerunner again on the second try, and still no Golden Flame. Finally we find the quest item in Blazerunner's cave, it wouldn't even have been necessary to kill him again, we could just have lured him away. Oh, well, sometimes one just plays sub-optimally.

Besides being a Legend of Zelda fan, I didn't get much out of the quest. Good quest series to do in the evenings, when you are tired, because most of the time on this quest is spent traveling. But the item rewards aren't really great for a priest: Either a sword or an off-hand item adding only +20 to healing, plus the boomerang. I can see how the boomerang would be highly attractive to a paladin, as you can use it for ranged pulling without needing any ranged weapon skills, its a trinket. I guess I'll just disenchant both rewards, and keep only the photograph of Linken and Princess Zelda, WoW style, as a souvenir. Due to a lack of storage space, I can't keep all the items I would want to.

Afterwards we went killing yetis in Winterspring for the "Are we there yeti?" quest. No problem with the killing, but the drop rate of the thick yeti fur is abysmal. We cleared out the complete large yeti cave and ended up with 4 of the 20 furs we needed. Unfortunately in that kind of quest there isn't really much of an advantage in doing it in a group.

So I decided to go to bed, when another guild mate requested help for killing the Scarlet Oracle. I switched to Raslebol and helped out. Quite a lot of guild members turned up, so we put everybody who needed the quest in the group that would tag the oracle, and everybody else in a raid group handling the large number of bodyguards. It is good to see how helpful the guild is in these matters. Kyroc will need to do that quest series as well, it gives one of the best wands in the game.

The weekend draws closer, and I plan to at least reach level 56 over the weekend with Kyroc. I also want to clean up some unfinished business, like the last Rescue OOX quest in Feralas. I tried that yesterday, but the damn chicken was bugged, and refused to move after I took the escort quest. If possible I would do some dungeon, but I'm not sure if 55 or 56 is already high enough for Scholomance and Stratholme. Level requirements are usually a bit lower for a priest, as he doesn't have problems with his targets resisting his spells as long as he heals.
Comments:
I *hate* collect-o-quests in a group. They're a real pain - you end up fighting over who's getting better drops, it takes twice as long, blah, blah.

Actually, I'm not a big fan of collect-o- quests period. One of the few things WoW seems to have gotten wrong is the drop rate on many of them - I've ground for an hour to get a single drop before now, and it's the most annoying thing on earth. I'm sure you've had similar experiences.

I actually like the Spirit of Aquementas reward from the Zelda-line. My Paladin doesn't need it (he just bought a +31 healing shield on the AH) but my Warlock uses it. It's one of the easiest off-hand +spell dmg/healing items to get. I'd hold onto it if I were you. (Note that there is a better +healing off-hand item drop from Dire Maul North so maybe the Spirit isn't the best for a healer. Still, it *is* healing AND damage and that's somewhat rare.)

At 56, a Priest can easily find a raid/group. Stratholme Raid (Baron or Scarlet), UBRS Raid, LBRS Raid, Scholomance Raid, BRD Raid -- all good candidates at 56. At 58 you might be able to do 5-man groups, including BRD and, my fav, Dire Maul. If you save up rest/blue exp, it's not all that difficult to level from 56 to 60 in raids and groups, without too much side questing.

Although if you're itching for 60, of course questing is the fastest. You just won't get the good items on the way, is all. (I recommend Western and Eastern Plaguelands for leveling, Burning Steppes too.)

My 60 priest never found anything better than the spirit of aquamentas for his healing weapon set. Swapping weapons in combat is a great way to improve your healing efficency. I used Hammer of Grace/Spirit of Aquamentas for +healing, Dancing Sliver for spirit and Argent Crusader for int. All enchanted with the matching enchant. All are easy to get without raiding.

For tough fights, start with int, switch to +healing after you use up the extra int. Switch to spirit if you have a break. Switching does trigger the global cooldown, so be careful. But you can swap while casting a spell, in which case it doesn't trigger the cooldown. Any time I needed to cast Prayer of Healing I'd start the spell and then hit the button to swap to my +heal gear to get the bonus when the spell went off. For trash clearing and solo I usually just stuck with the spirit unless something started to go wrong.

Of course you'll probably do fine without the swapping, but for me it was one more thing to do to keep me entertained while being the heal bot.

I don't mind collect-o-quests when soloing. Basically they give you a counter on how long you should grind this particular mob. I have had only a few cases where the low drop rate forced me to kill mobs longer than I would have liked to. Having played EQ I can probably stand grinding longer than the average WoW player. :)

I hadn't thought of switching in combat, probably because I never made a weapon switching macro, and doing it manually is a pain. My priest is using a 2h weapon, a staff, with +22 int on it, so no room for an off-hand item.

A guild mate of mine claims that +6 healing or damage is about equal to +1 int, which makes a +20 healing item not highly attractive.

I used +2.5 healing as about +1 int on gear. I think that's about what Blizzard figures as well, as the best +healing enchant (55) is probably designed to be about the same as the best int enchant (22). If you really want to optimize, you can plug your cast sequence to a spreadsheet http://www.wowhealers.com/content/view/195/50/ and get a real number, but I never bothered.

In any case the int doesn't do any good after the first few seconds of combat when you've used the bonus mana.

I just used the Wardrobe mod to switch weapons. It lets you define profiles (int weapon, healing weapon, fire resist gear, int gear, etc) and it's very easy to set up a macro to switch.

WoWhealer has a nice comparison of +int vs. +healing here. They directly compare the +22 int with the +55 healing enchantment and conclude that you need to cast 16k mana worth of healing spells in one combat before the +healing becomes better than the +intelligence.

The basic problem with both +spirit and +healing is that they *can* be better than +intelligence, but only in very long fights. While soloing or doing 5-man groups, fights are too short, and intelligence is by far the best stat.
