Wowification

Is it just me or is there many game companies out there modifying their games to make them more like World of Warcraft? Turbine just announced that with the next expansion set Dungeons & Dragons Online would add lots of solo content.

Is this wowification caused by customers having become used to the easy, casual, solo style of World of Warcraft and now loudly shouting for the same in every other game? Or was that a decision taken by some management guy in a suit who told the designers to make their game as successful as WoW or get fired?
Comments:
Well I'm not surprised really. A few months back on our guild forum I more or less predicted that they would have to do this or be damned. Btw, isn't this exactly what EQ2 had to do?

Bah, pushed the wrong radio button. The above comment was made by me.

Given the huge amount of money WoW has/is/will make,I really can't see why the corperate suits wouldn't push for imitating WoW as much as they can get away with.

Arguably they're listening to the same consumer pressure that Blizzard did when they made WoW solo-friendly in the first place. It wasn't an accident that WoW took the direction they did, Blizzard listened to what people were saying about EQ (among others) and made that game. I personally prefer the group experience, but the simple fact of the matter is that a large number of the potential MMO audience likes the solo option. This isn't a new trend caused by WoW, it was there before, and it's going to be there after.

You should watch the E3 trailer for "Dungeon Runners".

That game looks like an exact copy of WoW.
Especially the interface looks like it jumped right out of WoW.

I was going to say exactly the same regarding dungeon runners, the graphics are very WoWesq.

I hope they have something similar to the sidekick feature in City of Hero's, that is something I am surprised was never emulated by WoW.

Imagine instances having a max level, and to re-enter them you would level back down to something appropriate. Instead of exp though you could get more money like you do with quests at 60 at the minute. Also you can still enjoy content with new friends.

I'd also like the grouping options from CoH to be emulated as well, so that if you have 4 people in your party the dungeon would be set up accordingly.

I have to say I am put off by the whole point and click control system though.

I haven't played so many MMO's (only Lineage II, CoH/V and WoW) that I know all the best features of all the games though.

DDO failed the D&D test. This game is a disaster in my book and more solo content doesn't surprise me. D&D doesn't lend well to MMORPG. It can be played massively ala Neverwinter Nights, but never should 1,000 people be playing together by D&D rules.
