World of Warcraft: Flying Mounts
Blizzard updated their The Burning Crusade - Bestiary with more information on flying mounts. The page says: "After reaching level 70, players will eventually be able to obtain a flying mount for their characters.", but doesn't say how. I still hope it doesn't require some stupid long grind quest, or a quest where you need to hand in resources worth several thousand gold pieces. But my trust in Blizzard making the flying mount accessible for even the casual player is low, it will either be very grindy and expensive, or you'll need to hand in the head of the end boss of the toughest level 70 raid dungeon to get the mount.

Why do I get the feeling that these flying mounts will only be usable within the Outlands?
Perhaps it's this comment: "All flying mounts have the ability to fly one rider wherever he or she may want to go in Outland."

The developers have been saying for awhile that the flying mounts will only be usable in the outlands.
Apparently a lot of the scenery we see while flying over Azeroth is one dimensional and you would have a lot of people falling through the world if they tried to land in certain spots. The outlands has been designed from the ground up with flying mounts in mind so all the mountains and high up places are actually 3-D and solid.

I thought so. What about access to the Outlands? Is that restricted to lvl 70s only? i.e., just because you bought the expansion doesn't mean you automatically get access to the new content, first you have to grind to 70. That may explain the Devs comment about "After reaching level 70, players will eventually be able to obtain a flying mount..." If access to the Outlands is through a Portal, and it sounds like it will be, it would be a simple matter to deny access to anyone not lvl 70.
I dont think so, I have been getting the impression that the outlands were for the lvling from 60 to 70, I do not think they would require you to be 70 to enter. I think the "eventually" here is more evidence that it will be hard to get the flying mounts, and will take a lot of money and/or time.
Elsewhere some dev(s) also mentioned that the flying mounts will be used to access places otherwise deemed inaccessible. For example, you may need an epic mount to reach the entrance of a new instance. (Hypothetically.)
Tobald, you don't want getting a flying mount to be grindy, nor expensive, and you don't want it to be a hard quest. It sounds like you just want it to be easy, because that's about all the possible options! It's gotta be something dude, otherwise everyone will have 'em in a day or two. Using your criteria, the level 40 and 60 mounts are bad design as well because they are expensive.

I think Tobold is perhaps objecting more to Blizzard's S.O.P. of rewarding the 10% of WoWers who are Hardcore Raiders, while ignoring the 90% that are casual players.
I suspect unless you belong to a Hardcore Raiding Guild you're not going to obtain a Flying Mount, and it's already been established that without the Flying Mount you will not have access to a lot of the content in the expansion.
I suspect the other 90% of us will use the expansion as a way of gaining access to MC, ZG, etc, as Raids consisting of lvl 70 toons will not need as many players in the Raid in order to beat these Instances.

The level 40 and level 60 standard mounts are bad game design. The level 60 warlock and paladin mount are good game design. The quest series to get them is hard, costs some money (while being much cheaper than the normal epic mount), and doesn't include grinding.
If the flying mount quest was similar to the epic warlock, that would be good. If the flying mount is something which only a small percentage of WoW players will ever get, while the majority is excluded from game content they paid for, that is the beginning of the downfall of World of Warcraft. Everquest started to stagnate when people realized that they shouldn't buy the expansion sets, because the new content was for the top raiders only. WoW shouldn't go the same way.

I understand there will be some lvl 70 content in Azeroth- kharazan springs to mind. I'm guessing that other lvl 60-70 content will appear in and around azeroth as part of the expansion.
I would expect the flying mount to require the player to spend a fair bit of time in outland. I agree the 1k gold was harsh for the epic mount but it did make me work for the rep and the honor reduction to the cost which actually turned out ot be fun for me.
I would expect us to see most casual players flying around outland after a wee while.
