WoW Journal - 19-July-2006

More experiences with groups full of overexcited kids, I'm starting to wonder whether that is due to me playing during the day on my holidays, when more kids play and the adults are still at work. It seems that "ninjas" are a widespread obsession, although these kids never even experienced a real ninja-looter. Ninja-looting was still possible in Everquest, but with the WoW loot system the only thing you can do is rolling need on something you don't really need.

My priest is now level 38, and I was in a Scarlet Monastery group. A leather pants with +int and +sta dropped, and the druid in the group rolled need on it. As the item was better than what he was wearing, that was totally okay with me. That is what the need button is for. But two of the kids in the group seemed to think that rolling need on *any* green was called ninja-looting, and complained and harassed the druid without end, until the druid left the group and hearthstoned out. I then just left as well, as I was sick and tired of the bickering. Well, at least I got the Illusionary Rod from Doan.

I had several attempts at Scarlet Monastery now, but we always got stuck half-way through, in the armory, before even reaching Herod. Somebody had to leave, or people were fighting over unimportant green loot, really annoying.

Last night I ended up disappointing a group. A group was looking for a healer for Razorfen Downs, and as I hadn't visited that dungeon for a very long time, I signed up. We did the ultra cool skeleton rock concert, killed Glutton, and were half-way up the spiral to the end boss, when suddenly I had a migraine. The headache wasn't so bad, but I started having blind spots, and couldn't really follow the action on the screen any more. So I had to excuse myself and log off in the middle of the dungeon, and go to bed. Terribly sorry, I hate to kill a group like that.
Comments:
Probably all that heavy metal music at the skeleton rock concert.

Too much gaming leading to migraines tobbie?

Hope you're feeling better now.

Alas about GREEN LOOT.

I'm quite opinionated on the subject matter... here it goes:

I've played on two servers to level 60(both alliance) and on each they dealt with greens differently.
On server A (the older one / original one for me) everyone rolls NEED for green. Regardless if they can equip it or want to/ need to equip it.

On server B the newer server everyone rolled greed.

I think my first lesson came in one of my earliest of early UBRS runs where, the run had 15 people and the leader and maybe 3-5 other members where in the same guild. A green dropped that was an upgrade for me and I rolled need on it and won it. The group leader said to his friend "Friend tell dougnyc what happens when he rolls need on greens..." His friend responded they count as your blue!

Need less to say everyone rolled greed on the green items for the rest of the run.

Honestly when people do an instance they go for the nice blue gear from the boss not the green crap that drops from trash.

It doesn't matter to me if you Need the green! Why should I have to lose out on loot just because it’s an upgrade for you? If you need it; buy it from the AH when I go put it up there after the run.

/sigh

Some greens are way more valuable then other greens, but we're talking economics, if an item can be sold for a lot of gold, then IMHO it should be sold.

I hate it when someone rolls need on a nice green that would fetch a good price at the auction house, equips the item ( cause its an upgrade) and then at the end of the run a blue drops for the exact same equipment slot and he wants to get that too. And the previous green is now soul bound and worth far less. :-(

When it comes to green items they all get replaced eventually by blues and by epics. and Pugs IMHO should just all roll need on Greens and should all pass on Bind on pick ups!

That way you never have a situation where someone rolled need and "ninjad" the item.

IMHO if 4 members in a party roll greed and the last guy rolls need without discussing it with his fellows, that is a ninja. Plain and simple.

Avoid loot drama Tobold have everyone roll need on all BOE greens and Blues, and master loot the bosses.

If I win a green that is an upgrade for you, then message me privately with an offer to buy it from me, or maybe can I have it for free. If I don't care I can give it to you, after all it is a BOE.
But if I need money then I won’t give it to you as I NEED to sell it.

Lol I love those people who roll need (when everyone else rolls greed) because they need enchanting dust to skill up or people who need cause they need money.
Keep it simple we all have needs so we should all roll needs.

And you can take it a step forward by be generous with your fellow dungeon dwellers, if you win 6-7 greens in a row, or if you are getting a lot of blues from bosses, PASS on items gasp! spread the loot around don't be such a loot-whore!

A while back I was escorting my 10 y/old niece's 23 Mage and two Guildies through SM. We hit all four areas and a couple of Blues dropped that were very nice Mage items (one was an amulet), but my niece wouldn't be able to equip them for at least another 10 levels. I was talking to my niece thru Skype and she wanted to Need Roll them, but she held off until I cleared a Need roll with the group in /pchat first. We got the ok from my two Guildies, who were already well into their 30s (one was a Warrior, I forget what the other was), and my niece scored some nice Blues...that she still can't wear yet, just a few more levels to go :)

Communication is the key, but communication is often lacking among PUGs :(

Communication is almost always the issue when there is a loot problem. I've had PuGs use all sorts of different loot systems, and don't really care as long as the system is explained upfront, and is applied consistently. That being said, rolling need on everything because every toon "needs" the gold an item could bring is my least favorite option, and I would avoid any group that isn't willing to let someone claim and equip a green item if its an upgrade.

Have you ever tried to even just turn on master loot in a pickup group? Either people hearthstone out immediately, or they are threatening to do so. Master loot would require trust in the master looter, and there is no trust in a pickup group.

I disagree that people only do instances because of the boss loot. If that were the case, no priest would ever enter for example the armory in SM, as there is no useable priest boss loot from there. Nor is there for the druid. If the druid helps the warriors to get boss loot from Herod, why shouldn't he be allowed to roll need on something that is an upgrade for him?
