Losing the console wars

Trick question: Which was the best-selling games console in March 2007? If you answered Wii, you weren't quite right. While the Wii beat both the XBox 360 and the PS3, it sold less than ... the PS2. And the Nintendo DS handheld sold even more. The Wii isn't so much winning the next generation console wars as losing it the least badly. Meanwhile PC games sales for the first quarter of 2007 are up 17% compared to the same quarter of last year, with the sales of the Burning Crusade playing a big part in that. Even the New York Times sees rosy times ahead for PC games.

With all their fancy multimedia and internet capabilities, the next generation consoles are still not as good as a PC for surfing the internet. And if you consider that you need a PC for internet surfing anyway, upgrading it with a decent graphics card and more RAM so you can play games can end up costing you less than buying a PS3! Plus the PC still dominates some genres of games, like MMORPGs or strategy games.

I'm not currently planning to buy any next generation console anytime soon. If by christmas there are more games out for the PS3 that interest me, maybe. But right now I just don't see any interest in buying any one of them.
Comments:
I love my wii... as a party machine to fire up and play with my non-gamer friends a couple of times a month. Have yet to see any games with depth.

Still haven't seen an exclusive to the 360 or PS3 that isn't a different flavor of the FPS and fighting games I'm badly burned out on. Assassin's Creed is coming out for PC.

Alos, this year the PC has the clear killer apps: spore and crysis.

Hmmm, nearly everyone I know didn't buy a new Desktop PC in the last years, they bought a notebook (or a Macbook). Spending around 1000€, you get poor game performance, maybe it will run WoW.

So you have a solid notebook for work, media and internet and want to buy a second device for gaming... in this situation consoles become very interesting.

The core 2 duo mackbook pros are capable of running WoW at max settings, I recommend the glossy screen - the extra money is worth it. I've run several pc mmogs with bootcamp as well, they played fine - a few random crashes. I couldn't crank the settings up, but that has to do more with the video card than anything else. Parallels will have 3d support in the coming months.

Wii is awesome. Haven't touched WoW in months though.

FYI - WoW actually runs fantastic on a Mac. Back when I played on my iMac, my frame rate never dropped below 60. But I get that Macs aren't for everyone.

Allow me to blow my own trumpet here Tobold. I actually scooped the NYT on this one!!! http://mindbendingpuzzles.blogspot.com/2007/04/console-wars-irish-perspective.html#links

Loosing as badly? Analyse console sales during the first year of launch of all generations and you'll see that this generation outsells the last.

Sales of consoles follow a cycle and most of them are sold at a price point below $200. That will happen sometime end of next year.

That doesn't hide the fact that Nintendo was said to be dead last year and the 360 will beat the ps3 (dream on here) while I always said don't underestimate Nintendo, they do their things right since 20 years.

Now its all different. Wii is #1 and will stay there until the PS3 and 360 fall in price.

Another fact people might be interested in is that Nintendo is earning money since day one with the Wii while the 360 and Ps3 is sold under manufacturing price.

I dont want to start a console war here, it doesn't mean anything. I play software and buy the console which has the best for my taste :)

I got an Xbox 360. I never play it. I played if the brief period between WoW's 2.0 patch and the release of the burning crusade. I'd grind PvP honor and play gears of war during the down time.

Gears of war is awesome.

I bought an X-Box 360 6 months ago to cover all my gaming bases. I love RTS and MMOs for the strategy and depth, but I also enjoy a good twitch based action shooter which is where the 360 comes in. PC has some good shooters, but I am yet to play a 3rd person game on a PC that didn't feel quite right. Gears of War is a nice distraction and being able to play with RL friends who don't own a PC is why I will probably always own a console of some kind. Plus my wife likes Tetris :)

I'm moderately interested in a Wii, but no "must have" games have come out for it yet.

As for PS3, the only game on the horizon that's caused me to do anything more than snore is MGS4. That game might be enough to push me to get a PS3, but only when it comes out.

XBox360 has yet to release anything that would tear me away from my MMOs.

Now, on the other hand, I have both a PSP and a DS. The ability to play them while I wait for stuff in an MMO, plus the ability to play while I'm going to and from work (I take the subways and buses) is a huge boon.

@ Teut: No, the 360 is not sold under manufacturer's price. Yes Nintendo have made a profit from day one, but their console is essentially a peripheral; there's nothing "next gen" about it. You can't predict who's going to win on all three platforms (PS/3 being your choice?) because platforms are driven by software. 360 has the most, PS/3 is hard to develop for. The Wii stands the best chance of having an equivalent software library to the 360 (easy to develop for, low investment titles because of inferior hardware), so my money's split both ways between those two. Wii will need some killer software to stop it being a fad however.

@ Tobold: I've got a 360, and I play it a great deal. I like the games on the platform, and I like the cohesion of the platform. To imply that people play PC games over console games is a bit short sighted really, because they have different games for different demographics. Unfortunately for consoles, their target demographic currently can't afford them, but that will change as the cost of manufacture comes down. It's about investment now to reap rewards in the future.

You're right that the PS/2 is doing exceptionally well, and this is an indication of Sony's long term thinking to not abandon the platform. It has an A-list software librarby and the thing's very cheap, almost at stocking stuffer price levels. The game's don't look bad (God of War anyone?), so I'd say there's a couple of years in the PS/2 yet (I have one of those too).

I'll be getting a PS/3 once there's software on the platform to justify the expense. I'm interested in Heavenly Sword, but that and Resistance aren't quite enough to justify the tremendous cost of the platform just yet. That will change - it'll drop in price and more software will emerge that makes it a compelling platform to buy.

Like Kaziel, I'm not going to get a Wii just yet because there's nothing interesting software-wise in there. As with Wolfgangdoom, I have all my software bases covered with a PC, Xbox 360, and PS/2 for now :)
