Warhammer Online delayed to 2008
I just got the Warhammer Online newsletter, which contained one important information:
We have made the decision to move our ship date for the US and Europe to the first quarter of 2008. (Release dates for Asia will be announced at a later date.) Since our acquisition by EA, we have been afforded many wonderful development opportunities and we plan to take full advantage of everything that is available. This includes taking several additional months to make the best MMORPG possible. Many people already suspected this, but now it's official. No WAR before 2008. May I suggest a timing 3 months after the next WoW expansion? That tends to work well. :)

I agree with Keen. While I would be lying if I said I didn't want it sooner, I'd rather have a polished fun WAR later, than a Vangard-esqe experience sooner. Plus it's not like I'm lacking in games to play right now. ^^b
Gaming companies sometimes befuddle me by repeating mistakes, but perhaps this is a case of some common sense decision-making.
If the Warhammer product was looking like it would not be polished, then they are learning from the example of Vanguard (beta that showed poorly) and LOTRO (beta that was decently polished) -- the beta reviews will set the tone for your product, and you really need a good first impression.
Second, and possibly more important than targeting "three months after the next WoW expansion", is the timing relative to other MMOs, particularly LOTRO. Inevitably WoW will see attrition as a relatively "old" game; Warhammer's best shot at success may be to pick up those leaving WoW (rather than trying to compete with WoW). Unfortunately, right now those people will be strongly pulled by LOTRO simply by the combination of the Tolkien tagline plus a product that pulled good reviews -- right now, LOTRO is the WoW-clone that is picking up most of those who are leaving WoW. Not to mention that Vanguard is still in the wings. This make the MMO environment the consumer's market, and Warhammer will probably do well to wait for a time that another wave of people are tiring of WoW / LOTRO / Vanguard, and are ready for "something (anything) new". And Warhammer designers and developers get the side benefit of more time for polish and content, and perhaps even ... innovation (gasp!)

In this case, knowing that DaoC was released in pretty decent shape back when, I would say these guys didn't change their philosophy, but merely realized that they would need more time to release an acceptable product. The release date for Warhammer has always been floating. I doubt Vanguard changed their views - in fact, it reaffirmed existing decisions.
What makes you so sure that the next WoW expansion will be on time? We're talking about Blizzard, you know.
Three cheers to WHO being delayed. We've all seen what a rushed mmorpg looks like, and it's not pretty.

Although its good to hear that EA is being made sure its a good game this also means a disadvantage for WAR as well.... Instead of scooping up the players hemorhaging from wow right now this practically means WoW will have another strong year and i personally think, when war does come out blizzard will have its 2nd expansion at the same time to compete.
Speaking from a guy who just quit wow because BC sucks ass, i dont know what to choose IF they both come out about the same time. Warhammer- the new mmo, seems promising but backed up by nortorious game kill EA games or WoW- an expansion which will probaby correct its past mistakes knowing blizzard... Very hard choices indeed.

Again, it's astounding to me that people feel so certain that WOW's second expansion will be on time, given both the history of Blizzard, and the history of mmorpg development.
Only SOE seems capable of cranking out new expansions, like clockwork, and we've seen what their quality is like.
By the time Warhammer Online is released, WoW will be over three years old. If Mythic's new title is good, I doubt any new WoW expansion will derail their success, anyway.

Don't forget WAR's focus is PvP.
Turbine was clever to ignore PvP in LotR, it doesn't make sense to compete with Blizz (PvE) and the upcoming WAR (PvP).

This is an odd statement that I see here and there, that Lotro doesn't have PvP. It may be in a slightly different form, but it's certainly there...

I'd say Turbine was clever to put PvP into the end-game, instead of making it parallel to PvE. I can't be sure yet, but I have a feeling that LotRO PvP might end up being better than WoW PvP. And I would guess that the LotRO expansions will offer a lot more PvP, the developers already mentioned how cool Helm's Deep could be as PvP zone.

Exactly, and you haven't even mentioned Age of Conan, Pirates of the Burning Sea, and all the other MMORPG of 2007 yet. Some of which might actually be good.

Can't spell - deleted the last post.
Anyway another MMO that might be good is TCOS
I think its a good move to delay.
I am looking forward to this game....and would like it to be pretty polished.
Although if they are delaying this now....we might actually see the game in Q2 2008 - not Q1 2008
Come Q1 2008 they will probably need another few months....as is the way with most developments I have followed (work and play)

I think WAR will be a definite success. One problem. GW, LoTRO months before release date '' omg omg lord of the rings and guildwars online gona beat wooow!!'' what happened?? They screwed up..WoW players have tried them 2 games and now say to themselves '' oh my god, screw mmorpg's im staying with WoW' but with WAR it's a totally diferent situation. It will be better than WoW let alone Lotro, GW.. WoW will be left with loyal fan boys and WoW sad ass addicts forever. Where do you see WoW ending?
