Launched, and seriously impressed

It turns out that a community manager from the beta whose name I'm still not mentioning reads my blog, and wrote me an e-mail to ask for details, then wrote me another e-mail with a technical solution. The problem was not that companies launcher, but a corrupt file in Microsoft's .NET Framework. A problem with Microsoft software, who would have thunk that? :)

So not only are my beta starting problems solved, I am now also *seriously* impressed with that companies customer service. I'll tell you more about the game once the NDA is dropped.
Comments:
Really have to take the 'seriously impressed' part with a grain of salt I think... We know you're humble and don't want to hear about it, but you're not Joe Blogger anymore Tobold.. I could of course be wrong, but I'd bet the same comments on a more random blog wouldn't have got the same support..

It could be that your reader is devoted and would have helped in the same way no matter where the comments came from, of course..

But to generalize about that game's customer support? hmm.. Call me sour but I'd have to see that on a live, launched title ;)

Really looking forward to more crunchy details tho !

If the beta you are talking about is the very same beta I am thinking about.....well, just know that I hate you.

Gratz, Tobolds! *shakes fist at Redmond*

*anxiously awaits details*

Does this mean, Tobold, that you will be setting up a "Do you have problems with MMO's? Report it here and the CM's will advise on fixing it" corner?

Pretty please?

any ETA of the NDA being lifted? well, now? ;)

and kudos to that CM to help you out so quickly.

"It turns out that a community manager from the beta whose name I'm still not mentioning reads my blog"

Dead give away there. The game is Warhammer Online.

Martin makes a good point but I'd say what "they" did was a step in the right direction. Of course, let's see how well the customer service performs when they have a few million subscribers too :)

With customer service being so horrid in games like WoW, it's be a nice breath of fresh air to have a company who actually cares about their customers. If that does happen and it's a great game, I'd have no problem dropping WoW like a bad habit and I bet there are a lot more like me out there in cyberspace :)

Microsoft Press release

PR02432 15 Aug 2000

Microsoft and Climax Combine to Develop Warhammer Online

Climax has joined forces with Microsoft to develop the back-end technology required to deliver Warhammer Online, the Internet-playable version of the massively-popular Warhammer series of table-top games which was announced earlier this year.

Currently under development in Climax’s recently-acquired Nottingham studios, Warhammer Online will take the world’s most successful fantasy battle gaming system to the Internet as a massively multiplayer persistent world strategy game. The game will allow gamers to play Warhammer using their personalised armies against opponents from anywhere in the world.

Microsoft, through its Windows Third Party Gaming Group, will apply its considerable online expertise to the project. Microsoft’s involvement will cover a number of distinct elements, from online gameplay (through effective use of the DPlay API) through to management of the game’s back-end databases and e-commerce functionality.

“The plans which Climax and the Games Workshop have unveiled for Warhammer Online are very ambitious and very exciting,” says Mike Gamble, European Manager for Microsoft’s Windows Third Party Gaming Group. “We are delighted to get involved and believe that Microsoft’s vast expertise in online gaming and e-commerce will help this project to achieve its enormous potential.”

"This is a massive vote of confidence in Climax and our joint venture with Games Workshop,” says Karl Jeffrey, President of Climax. Partners don't come any bigger or better and naturally we are very excited to have them on board. This clearly puts us at the forefront of online gaming development."

It is expected that the Warhammer Online project will have a total development time of between two and three years.

A few years late. :)

If it is Warhammer, consider me one jealous son of a gun.

If it doesn't have puppies or ponies in it, I'm not playing.

Yes I'm a guy, but I'M JUST THAT SENSITIVE.

I want to echo martin richard's comment. How can you be impressed with a company customer service that requires you to have a blog read by a few thousand people a day in order to get any service. Did the cummunity manager solve the board problem too or is the normal user out of luck unable to use the board to resolve any problems?

The board problem solved itself, apparently the board was just down. And yes, on the boards there is a technical customer service part solving problems for non-bloggers.

As far as I know the European beta for Warhammer Online hasn't even started yet. But you can sign up for it at http://www.war-europe.com/.
