Paul Barnett explains MMOs to normal people

Interesting video of Paul Barnett at the lift conference. He's not saying anything about Warhammer Online, but instead explains very well why it is usually a bad idea to try to copy something successful, especially in a fast-changing market. I liked his talk very much, because he talks honestly about the need to make profits, the fact that nobody really knows how to make successful MMOs, and how to steer the difficult part between brilliant but crazy innovation and solid but staid game design. I so hope the man can make games as good as he talks!

Comments:
Yeah, I hope so too.

Sadly, I met people like that during my brief time in the game industry and they could TALK a great game, but couldn't deliver one to save their lives.

I'm fairly optimistic about Mythic's chances though--DAoC was the first MMO I ever hit the level cap in.

When you consider the resources that Mythic has poured into promoting WAR, it's certainly not good news that your post has received only one reply aside from mine.

Actually I find it encouraging that people prefer to talk about games they are actually playing, instead of endlessly hoping for the next big thing. The hype around WAR has cooled down a bit since many people realized that this isn't a "WoW Killer". But there is a good chance that when the game comes out it turns out to be playable enough, and the discussion of it will pick up.

Paul has a good vision imho and that speech was great (even without slides).

funny that all of a sudden game-companies open up their vaults (Blizzard telling which games goty cancelled, EA regret how they handled Westwood/Bullfrog/...)
