Streaming or Blu-ray solved

Is Blu-ray of digital streaming the future of entertainment? I solved the problem by buying a Samsung BD-E6100 which can do either. Blu-ray players with Wifi are obviously a bit more expensive than those without, but I don't mind paying a bit more for quality. I also picked up the James Bond 50th anniversary edition on Blu-ray some reader mentioned.

It'll all go under the Christmas tree of me and my wife, from "us" to "us". :) Pro tip for anybody considering a similar purchase: Buy a HDMI cable while you buy the Blu-ray player, it generally isn't included in the package.

Comments:
The HDMI cable is the "gotcha" purchase after the Blue-ray investment. It's right up there with the lack of memory cards coming with a camera or camcorder: you need them to use the equipment, but it's never actually in the purchased equipment.

Please tell me you weren't conned into buying a €100 hdmi cable. I am constantly astounded by the barefaced manner retailers push these ultra expensive cables onto consumers when a humble €10 cable is every bit as good for the average consumer.

I'd never spend €100 on a cable. But I did make sure I got a category 2 HDMI 1.4 cable. Which was a bit more expensive than a €10 HDMI 1.3 cable, but I thought I might need the Ethernet channel at some point.

When I bought my first blue ray player a paid 50 bucks for a cable. I didnt open it up yet and someone told me about getting it off amazon for 2 bucks. Sure enough I found it on amazon and took the expensive one back to the store and got my money back. The cheap one works just fine.

Looks like the same thing I have built into my Samsung TV. Hope it runs a lot faster and smoother, I got so frustrated I bought the Apple TV and they are light years apart in terms of performance and the general usability of the UI.

That being said, I did buy the cheaper version of the TV as opposed to the one with the faster processor although with the price difference not being far off the cost of my Apple unit I have no regrets.

I have to agree with Woody. I love my Samsung widescreen TV and I thought I'd make a lot of use out of the SmartHub Netflix app. Unfortunately, the image quality doesn't hold up to my PS3. It seems like Netflix on SmartHub streams at 720p but PS3 does 1080p.

Well done Tobby, a good choice. Merry Christmas to you and to your wife!

On a side note, I just managed to grab XCOM for a nice price (15€). I was planning to start the game this way: Classic + Ironman.

A friend told me "don't do that, you will regret the choice".

What do you think? Maybe just Classic without Ironman?

I stand to my previous suggestion to start XCOM at normal or easy with Ironman. That way you'd get to see the whole game with all the consequences of failures or bad decisions, without necessarily them ending the game prematurely in a loss.
