Going into surgery

I have an enlarged prostate. That is a very common medical problem for men over 60. Two thirds of men have an enlarged prostate at the age of 60, and 95% at the age of 80. Gravity and the degree of enlargement obviously varies case by case. I am lucky enough for my growth to be benign, not a cancer. But unlucky enough for it being big enough to require surgery. So I'll be going into surgery on Tuesday, and will have to stay at the hospital for 4 days. And recovery will probably take some time. So I won't be posting on this blog for probably at least 2 weeks.

I am somewhat nervous about this surgery. I know that general anesthesia has much improved over the past 50 years, and mortality rates are now very low. And I know that I'm undergoing a rather standard operation. But still I worry about recovery, and possible after-effects. The list of possible after-effects is a scary read, and doesn't actually sound much better than the symptoms I have to start with. But then, of course, that is "possible" after-effects, and nobody can really predict how I'll feel a month from now. Wish me luck!

Comments:
Good luck with your surgery. I hope all goes well and that you recover quickly.
