Starcraft II

Blizzard's rumored big announcement today turned out not to be World of Starcraft, but Starcraft II. Given how cult Starcraft is in Korea and that Blizzard announced it there, this isn't really a big surprise. But that still leaves a lot of people hoping for another MMORPG from Blizzard, and if it isn't World of Starcraft, I don't really see what. It's too early for WoW2, and World of Diablo would be too similar. Well, I guess at least the Koreans are happy.
Comments:
Disappointing. I was hoping for a new MMO from Blizz myself.

I don't know. Would it really be wise to make another MMO that competes with your own? Espescially one that is as successful as WoW? I don't know the answer to that, but I'm sure Blizzard has done/is doing the numbers on that.

One big yawner.

RTS are so last century )

One of my friends predicted that this was SC2, and he also predicted that this is a precursor to Worlds of Starcraft. Remember, the setting of Starcraft at the end of the original game was left us with some pretty big questions. Ones that would be best answered by another RTS game. I wouldn't be surprised if SC2 ended in a fairly closed manner, similar to WC3, and was a precursor for WoS.

One thing that I was really hoping for was a Starcraft MMO, which was halfway between Planetside and Total Annihilation's Boneyards. A global realtime war that was fought by several subcommanders, with each battle contributing to the overall progress of the war. Oh well, you can't have everything..

RTS are so last century

Tell that to all the people that still, to this day, log on to Battle.Net regularly for games of Starcraft, or all the pro gaming Tournaments that still have Starcraft as a feature.

Ontop of that, have a look at some of the huge RTS games that have come out recently and you'll know that these games are still just as huge as they once were.

A SC mmo would have been a bigger hit, but it's already been stated that SC2 begain development before WoW was released, and Vivendi didn't yet know just how huge WoW was going to become.

I still think there's going to be a SC mmo and I think it's going to be ten times more successful than SC2.

RTS will never be as popular as they once were and SC2 isn't going to be the hit that everyone is predicting.

I'm super excited for sc2 and I'm not Korean! "Hell, it's about time!"

Oh no, a SC MMO right now would be do pretty much nothing for Blizzard. The SC IP is pretty much dead for a lot of western people. building a simlar MMO onto it would be a huge mistake. They need to ressurect the IP first, just what WC3 did for WoW. If the IP is ready they will turn in into an MMO, but nothing like WoW. Two similar games canibalize their communities and do not increase revenue.

What many people wanted, wasn't a SC MMO, it was a WoW clone in a sci-fi setting. I got a tip for those people: watch out for Tabula Rasa. Beta is rolling right now, and TR does more things right than wrong. It's not really an MMO for my taste right now, but i think this will find a solid playerbase.

My personal thought on this is that I wish I'd ever been able to get into an RTS game. The kind of high-speed micromanagement demanded by these games is stressful, not fun, for me.

I do kind of wonder where SC2 is going to fit into the modern RTS market. Warhammer 40k had more factions with diverse playstyles, Company of Heroes had tons of small unit tactics, Supreme Commander had large-scale battles and economy. "Starcraft with slightly bigger battles and updated graphics" may not be the big seller it was a decade ago, at least not outside of Korea.

I'd love to see World of Starcraft. A casual-friendly, actiony version of EVE would be very very interesting.

Diablo needs a refresher imo.

Starcraft 2 will be a good change too...

Awesome! Purely awesome! Are we the only ones that see this is a good thing...no, great thing!?!

SC is the biggest and best RTS ever made and I am so glad that they went with this over SC MMO.

I do find it strange how many of you are disappointed in this announcement. With so many big titles like LotRO, WarHammer, & WoW: BC out you can’t find something you like? Are you so dissatisfied with what is out that only a SC MMO would save the day?

Now if they make one later I have no complaint since they did us (the fans) right by making SC2 before a SC MMO.

Wow - I thought I was the only one disappointed by the announcement. I never liked Starcraft... never managed to pull me in the way Warcraft 2 did. Most fun I had with my friends was setting up a LAN WC2 game (in between our DnD sessions that is)... I sucked, but if I managed to pull off a nice alliance with someone I could at least be on the winning team. :)

Learn people.

A company that makes more than one MMO does not "take away" any money. Look at Sony and learn. They are buying MMO's and making their own.

You have people that play more than one MMO and are brand loyal. You can more player base for the new IP.

The infrastructure is in place (servers, game engine, partnerships, distribution), lessons have been learned, ...

"Blizzard MMO Pack" -- For existing WoW, BC clients... $25 per month play WoW and Starcraft Online. CHA CHING!
